Ford’s full-size SUV, the Expedition, is versatile enough for moderate off-roading and substantial hauling, boasting a maximum towing capacity of 9,600 pounds. It offers a smooth ride, though its vague steering feels more like a pickup truck. Interior space is generous, especially in the longer Expedition Max, which seats up to eight. The SUV is powered by a twin-turbo V-6 engine with outputs ranging from 400 to 440 horsepower. While competitors like the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban have better steering feedback and offer more powertrain options, they fall short in towing capacity. What’s New?
The 2025 Expedition lineup has been refreshed with new head- and taillights, a revised grille, and updated wheel designs. A two-piece tailgate allows easier cargo access, inspired by the Lincoln Navigator. Inside, a bi-level screen setup includes a large infotainment display and an upper unit for gauges. The off-road Timberline trim has been replaced by the Tremor trim, which features similar off-road enhancements
Power Source
The Expedition is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, available in rear- or four-wheel drive. It offers either 400 or 440 horsepower. While the ride is comfortable for passengers, handling and steering feel are less refined for the driver. The Tremor model is designed for off-roading, with features like a raised suspension, skid plates, and specialized tires, as well as driving modes to aid in challenging terrain..
Entertainment and Connectivity
All Expedition models come with a large 24.0-inch display that functions as both a digital gauge cluster and infotainment system. Built on Google software, it offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates, and the ability to watch movies while parked. Onboard Wi-Fi is also included.
Comfort
The Expedition’s interior varies in luxury depending on the model, with the Platinum trim featuring premium materials and massaging seats. Both the standard and long-wheelbase Max provide spacious interiors, with a comfortable third row suitable for adults. The second row can be configured with either a bench or captain’s chairs, and both rows fold flat for easy cargo loading.
Driver-Assistance Features
The Expedition features a comprehensive suite of standard and optional driver-assistance technologies, including Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving feature. Key safety offerings include forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.
Fuel Economy
The rear-wheel-drive Expedition achieves EPA estimates of up to 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, while four-wheel-drive models estimate 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Real-world testing showed it returning 20 mpg on a 75-mph route.
Warranty and Maintenance Cover
Ford offers a competitive warranty for the Expedition, particularly excelling in powertrain coverage, though it does not include complimentary scheduled maintenance. The limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles, and the powertrain warranty extends to five years or 60,000 miles.
