Interior Improvements

Numerous changes have been made to the 2024 4 Series’ interior, chief among them being the redesign of the steering wheel, which now has gearshift paddles and multi-function face buttons that light up. A new ambient lighting strip that runs the length of the dashboard and improved air vent management are now possible thanks to the touchscreen integration of climate controls.

Material Evolution and Eco-Friendly Options

A noteworthy introduction to the 4 Series is the availability of ‘M Perfomtex’ material for the seats, aimed at reducing production CO2 emissions. This move showcases BMW’s commitment to eco-friendly solutions. Additionally, BMW’s smartphone app has been updated, introducing an Efficiency Coach option to optimize driver inputs for improved fuel economy and lower emissions.

Powertrain Updates

The 4 Series’ four-cylinder engines remain under the hood, though the 420i and 430i grades  get access to 2.0-liter turbo-petrol four-cylinder variants. One notable feature of the 3.0-liter, six-cylinder M440i is its 48-volt mild hybrid system, which helps to save fuel consumption at cruising speeds and provides an 8kW boost at takeoff. The M440i’s power output stays at 285kW/500Nm.

M4: Performance Boost and Transmission Options

The top-of-the-line M4 coupe and convertible have the same updated exterior and interior styling as the 4 Series. With a 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder engine that now generates 390kW instead of 375kW, the Competition xDrive grade stands out for its improved power. There are differences between the six-speed manual gearbox found in the base M4 and the eight-speed automatic gearbox found in the Competition variant, which is available with both rear- and all-wheel drive.
