Acura is stepping into the electric vehicle market by reintroducing the ZDX, a name from its past, but with a contemporary twist. The original ZDX, launched in 2010, featured a gas engine and a distinctive fastback design that was ahead of its time. The new 2024 ZDX SUV adopts a more conventional two-box SUV shape but retains some innovative styling cues, including a floating roof, smooth body sides, and a faux grille with an illuminated border. This new ZDX results from a collaboration between Acura’s parent company Honda and General Motors, leveraging GM’s Ultium battery technology. The ZDX will be built at GM’s Springhill, Tennessee assembly plant, alongside the Cadillac Lyriq, and will share its electric powertrains.
What’s New?
For the 2024 model year, Acura revives the ZDX nameplate, marking its first foray into the electric SUV segment. This new model represents Acura’s commitment to electrification and innovation in the luxury SUV market.
Power Source
The entry-level ZDX A-Spec features a single 342-horsepower electric motor that drives the rear wheels. An optional second motor boosts total output to 490 horsepower and provides all-wheel drive. The sportier Type S variant includes two motors, producing a combined 499 horsepower. This model also features an air suspension system with adaptive dampers and larger Brembo brakes for enhanced performance. The Type S model, which we test-drove in Southern California, impresses with its quiet cabin, composed cruising demeanor, and well-weighted steering. However, it lacks the agility and steering feedback expected from a Type S model. Despite this, the ride quality remains exceptionally smooth, even with the larger 22-inch wheels.
Entertainment and Connectivity
The ZDX comes equipped with an 11.3-inch infotainment display prominently placed in the center of the dashboard and an 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster in front of the driver. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system runs on Google’s Android Automotive platform, featuring Google Maps as the default navigation tool. The vehicle includes a high-quality Bang & Olufsen sound system with 14 speakers, some of which are stylishly integrated into the interior design with brushed aluminum grilles
Comfort
The ZDX offers a comfortable and luxurious interior with two rows of seating for up to five passengers. While some components are shared with GM models, such as window switches and climate controls, Acura’s distinct design language sets the ZDX apart. Standard features include leather upholstery, 12-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats in A-Spec models, and 16-way power-adjustable seats with thigh extensions and heavier side bolsters in Type S models. Additional standard features are dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, a power-adjustable steering column, and a panoramic sunroof. The cabin is notably quiet, and both the front and rear seats are designed for long-distance comfort. The driving position is particularly well-regarded, and visibility is excellent.
Driver-Assistance Features
The ZDX is equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features, including standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Upgrading to the AcuraWatch 360+ system provides adaptive cruise control with a hands-free driving mode. Detailed safety ratings and crash test results will be available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
Fuel Economy
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not yet released MPGe estimates for the ZDX. However, it is expected to have similar ratings to the Cadillac Lyriq, which boasts up to 95 MPGe in the city and 82 MPGe on the highway. Real-world fuel economy figures will be available after the ZDX undergoes further testing, including a 75-mph highway fuel economy test.
Conclusion
The 2024 Acura ZDX marks a significant leap for Acura into the electric vehicle realm, boasting cutting-edge design and performance thanks to its collaboration with General Motors and utilization of GM’s Ultium battery technology. Despite its luxurious features and advanced engineering, the ZDX’s driving experience seems more in line with Honda’s practicality rather than Acura’s usual sporty and premium appeal. While it offers great value, range, and comfort, enthusiasts seeking a distinct Acura driving feel might find it leans more towards Honda’s heritage. Nonetheless, it remains a compelling choice for those embracing the electric SUV future.
